Heaney, Sister Margaret, 88, a Sister of Mercy for 69 years (formerly Sister Mary Hugh) died at Miriam Hospital Tuesday, November 13, 2018. She was the daughter of the late Hugh and Alice (Sharkey) Heaney. She is survived by James Heaney of Florida and Ellen Silvia of Pawtucket. She was the sister of the late Hugh, Joseph and Raymond Heaney.
She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1949 and taught in many Rhode Island schools. One of her last ministries was at Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, MA. Teaching in high school was a very different experience from working with primary children. But, never let it be said that any teenager could get the best of Sister Margaret. Her motto, “All for Thee, O Lord” enabled her to work with the students and live out her life in Mercy.
Although a woman of few words, her Irish heritage enabled her to be a wonderful storyteller. Reminiscing about the exploits of her siblings, her sense of humor showed itself. She had a great love for her family, her community, and her loving friend, Rose Marie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Vianney Church, 3609 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. with a Mercy Prayer Service at 9:40 a.m. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sister’s memory to the Sisters of Mercy, 15 Highland View Road, Cumberland, RI 02864 will be appreciated.
